Discover more about Harumi Bridge (Former Harumi Railway Bridge)

Harumi Bridge, also known as the Former Harumi Railway Bridge, offers a unique blend of history and modern urban scenery. Constructed in 1957, the bridge once served as a vital railway link for freight trains, connecting the Etchujima cargo station and Toyosu coal wharf. It was a key component of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's port authority, facilitating the transport of goods across the Harumi Canal. However, with the rise of motor vehicles, the demand for marine and freight transport declined. The Harumi line was discontinued in 1989, leaving the bridge abandoned for over 30 years. During this time, the bridge became a semi-popular, rust-covered sight for railway enthusiasts. Today, the Harumi Bridge is undergoing renovations to become a scenic pedestrian walkway. This transformation aims to reinforce the structure against earthquakes and create a public space where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Tokyo Bay, the city skyline, and landmarks like the Rainbow Bridge and Tokyo Tower. The renovation is expected to be completed by fiscal year 2025. Located in the Harumi district, a reclaimed island in Chuo City, the bridge is surrounded by modern developments, including high-rise apartments and the former Olympic Village. The area offers a mix of recreational activities, parks, and waterfront promenades, making it an ideal destination for a leisurely afternoon.
