The Site of the Abstinence Palace (Saiku) in Meiwa, Mie Prefecture, is a window into ancient Japan, offering a serene and historically significant experience. From the Asuka period to the Nanbokucho period, this site served as the residence and palace for Saio, unmarried imperial princesses sent to serve at the Ise Grand Shrine. These princesses dedicated their lives to prayer and service, acting as intermediaries between the imperial family and the gods. Excavations in the mid-20th century revealed the vast scale of the palace complex, which once measured 1 km east to west and 500 meters north to south. The site has been designated a national historical site since 1979. Today, visitors can explore the meticulously maintained grounds, which include reconstructed buildings that offer a glimpse into the Heian period. The Saiku Historical Museum, located on the edge of the archaeological site, displays artifacts and information about the Saio and their lives. The Saiku was more than just a residence; it was a center of culture and ritual. Though the Saio dedicated much of their time to prayer, they also engaged in cultural pursuits such as writing Waka poems, enjoying music, and reading stories. The lifestyle of the Saio, while modest, also reflected the elegance of the capital, with princesses wearing Juni-Hitoe (ceremonial kimonos) and playing games.
