Travel Guide to Hakone Checkpoint

Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving from Izu, take the Izu Skyline route (Izu Kogen) towards Hakone. Follow the signs for Route 1 and continue until you reach Hakone. The journey will take approximately 1 hour. Once you arrive in Hakone, look for signs directing you to Hakone Checkpoint, which is located at 1番地 Hakone, Ashigarashimo District, Kanagawa 250-0521. There is parking available nearby, but be aware that it may incur a small fee.

• Train and Bus

  For those using public transportation, start by taking the train from Izu to Odawara Station. You can take the JR Tokaido Line from Izu-Atagawa Station to Odawara Station. Once at Odawara Station, transfer to the Hakone Tozan Railway and take the train to Hakone-Yumoto Station. From Hakone-Yumoto Station, you can catch a local bus (Hakone Tozan Bus) that goes directly to Hakone Checkpoint. The bus ride will take around 20 minutes. You may need to pay for the train and bus fares, which total approximately 1,500 yen.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, you can take a taxi from your location in Izu directly to Hakone Checkpoint. The taxi ride will take about 40 minutes, depending on traffic, and will likely cost between 8,000 to 10,000 yen, depending on your exact starting point.

• Combination of Train and Walking

  Another option is to take the train from Izu to Odawara Station on the JR Tokaido Line and then transfer to the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-Yumoto Station. From Hakone-Yumoto, you can walk to Hakone Checkpoint, which is about a 30-minute walk uphill. This option allows you to enjoy the scenic views along the way, but make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.
