The statues of Mr. and Mrs. Yonetaro Otani are located within the historic Senso-ji Temple in Tokyo's Asakusa district. Senso-ji, Tokyo's oldest temple, is dedicated to Kannon, the Bodhisattva of compassion, and attracts millions of visitors annually. The story of Senso-ji Temple dates back to 628 AD, when two brothers, Hinokuma Hamanari and Takenari, found a statue of Kannon in the Sumida River. The temple was erected to enshrine this statue, becoming a significant religious and cultural center. Over the centuries, Senso-ji has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, including after the bombings of World War II. The Otanis played a vital role in the reconstruction of Senso-ji, specifically the Hozomon Gate. Yonetaro Otani, a former sumo wrestler and founder of Hotel New Otani, donated a substantial amount of money for the reconstruction of the Hozomon Gate in 1964. The statues stand as a tribute to their contribution and are located off to the side.
