Discover more about Jigoku Nozoki (View of Hell)

Jigoku Nozoki, aptly named the "View of Hell," is a must-see attraction for adventurous travelers visiting Mount Nokogiri. Located within the grounds of Nihon-ji Temple, this unique rock formation extends dramatically from the mountain, providing an exhilarating experience with stunning vistas. Mount Nokogiri, meaning "saw mountain" in Japanese, gets its name from its jagged, saw-tooth-like ridge. Originally a quarry during the Edo period (1603-1868), the mountain's stone was used for significant construction projects, including the Yokosuka port and the Yasukuni Shrine. The quarrying process shaped the landscape, leaving behind steep cliffs and the precarious rock outcropping that is now Jigoku Nozoki. To reach Jigoku Nozoki, visitors can hike up the mountain or take the Nokogiriyama Ropeway. The path to the viewpoint leads through the Nihon-ji Temple complex, founded in 725 AD, adding a cultural and historical dimension to the experience. Along the way, you'll encounter hundreds of Rakan statues, disciples of Buddha, carved into the mountainside. Standing at the edge of Jigoku Nozoki, you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360-degree view. The panoramic vista encompasses Tokyo Bay, the Miura Peninsula, and the Boso Peninsula's rolling hills. On a clear day, you might even catch a glimpse of Mount Fuji and the Tokyo Skytree in the distance. While the height can be unnerving for some, the stunning scenery makes it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers.
