Discover more about Former Iwasaki Kayacho Mansion and Gardens

Step back in time at the Former Iwasaki Kayacho Mansion and Gardens, a historical gem in Tokyo's Taito City. Once the residence of the Iwasaki family, founders of the Mitsubishi conglomerate, this estate offers a unique blend of architectural styles and a tranquil garden setting. Built in 1896, the mansion reflects the brilliance of British architect Josiah Conder, who combined Western and Japanese aesthetics in his designs. The estate originally covered 49,400 square meters and included 20 buildings. Today, three main structures remain: a Western-style mansion, a Japanese-style house, and a billiard house. The Western-style building showcases Jacobean and Pennsylvania country-house elements, while the billiard house resembles a Swiss chalet. The Japanese-style house, connected to the Western building by a corridor, features traditional designs and artwork. The gardens provide a peaceful retreat with meticulously landscaped grounds that change with the seasons. Visitors can explore the lawn garden, stone lanterns, and other traditional Japanese garden elements. The site also offers insights into the history of the mansion and its significance in Tokyo's development. The mansion and gardens were confiscated by the GHQ after World War II and were eventually returned to the government. Today, the site is open to the public as a park, offering a glimpse into the opulence and cultural refinement of the Meiji era.
