Discover more about Inokashira Park Zoo

Inokashira Park Zoo, officially named Inokashira Park Zoo (Inokashira Shizen Bunkaen), offers a unique blend of natural beauty and wildlife encounters in the heart of Tokyo. Located in Musashino, the zoo occupies about one-third of Inokashira Park, a spacious green oasis straddling Musashino and Mitaka. The zoo is divided into two main areas: the Zoo Area and the Aquatic Life Park. The Zoo Area houses various mammals and birds, including Japanese squirrels in their expansive Squirrel Trail, fennec foxes, and capybaras. The Aquatic Life Park focuses on freshwater creatures native to Japan, such as the Japanese giant salamander and the Tokyo bitterling. The park also features a sculpture garden displaying around 200 works by Seibo Kitamura, adding a cultural dimension to the zoological experience. Originally conceived as a large zoo, wartime constraints led to a focus on native species and a more intimate scale. Today, Inokashira Park Zoo plays a vital role in conserving endangered Japanese species, including the Tsushima leopard cat, Japanese fire-belly newt, and black-faced spoonbill. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the park's diverse landscapes, from woodland areas to the serene Inokashira Pond. A mini amusement park offers rides for children, while cafes provide relaxing休憩 spots. The zoo's historical significance and commitment to conservation make it a worthwhile destination for locals and tourists alike.
