    From Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden's Shinjuku Gate, follow the main path through the Japanese Garden. The Kyu-Goryo-Tei (Taiwan Pavilion) is located near a tranquil pond in the Japanese Garden. The walk is approximately 15 minutes. Note that some paths in the Japanese Garden are unpaved. Entrance to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is 500 yen.

  • Public Transport

    Take the Marunouchi Subway Line to Shinjukugyoenmae Station. Exit the station and walk approximately 5 minutes to the Okido Gate or Shinjuku Gate of Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. From Sendagaya Station on the JR Chuo/Sobu Line, it is a 5-minute walk to the Sendagaya Gate. Enter the garden (500 yen) and follow the walking directions. Subway fare from Shinjuku Station to Shinjukugyoenmae Station is approximately 200 yen.

Nestled within the serene Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, the Kyu-Goryo-Tei (Taiwan Pavilion) stands as a testament to cultural harmony and tranquil beauty. This historical landmark, also known as the Taiwan Pavilion, offers visitors a unique glimpse into traditional Taiwanese architecture within the heart of Tokyo. Originally constructed to celebrate the friendship between Japan and Taiwan, the pavilion was donated by Japanese residents in Taiwan to commemorate the wedding of Emperor Showa Hirohito. Completed in 1927, the pavilion was designed by architect Moriyama Matsunosuke and is an accurate reproduction of Southern Chinese Minnan architecture. The architectural style, called Binnan, was popular in Taiwan from the early nineteenth century and originates from China's southern Fujian Province. The building is prized for the color and shape of its roof, the style of its windows, and its interior design. Many of the construction materials were brought from Taiwan, including Taiwan cedars for the pillars and Taiwan cypress for the ceiling panels. Visitors can explore the pavilion and its surroundings, taking in the intricate wooden craftsmanship and traditional design. The Relaxation Room offers a panoramic view of the Japanese Garden. The pavilion is surrounded by lush greenery, seasonal flowers, serene ponds, and meticulously manicured landscapes, providing an idyllic setting for quiet contemplation. It is a particularly beautiful spot during the cherry blossom season and the autumn foliage, offering stunning views and perfect photo opportunities.
