Discover more about Tokyo Takarazuka Theater

Located in the heart of Tokyo's theater district, the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater is a vibrant and iconic venue dedicated to the Takarazuka Revue. Founded in 1913 by Ichizo Kobayashi, the president of Hankyu Railways, the Takarazuka Revue was initially conceived as a way to attract tourists to the town of Takarazuka. Inspired by Western-style theater, Kobayashi created an all-female troupe that would perform musicals, revues, and plays, a stark contrast to the traditional all-male Kabuki theater. The Tokyo Takarazuka Theater opened its doors in 1934, quickly becoming a beloved entertainment destination. After World War II, the theater was briefly renamed the Ernie Pyle Theater and managed by the Allied Powers before reverting to its original name in 1955. The original building was demolished in 1998 and rebuilt in 2001, boasting a seating capacity of over 2,000. The theater's design ensures excellent views from every seat, enhancing the immersive experience. The Takarazuka Revue is composed of five troupes: Flower, Moon, Snow, Star, and Cosmos, each with its own distinct style and repertoire. A sixth group, Senka, consists of experienced performers who appear in various productions as needed. Each troupe is led by a "Top Star" (otokoyaku, playing male roles) and a "Top Musumeyaku" (playing female roles). The performers, known as Takarasiennes, undergo rigorous training at the Takarazuka Music School. Performances typically include a play and a revue, showcasing a blend of Western musicals, French cabaret, and Japanese folktales. The lavish costumes, elaborate sets, and high-energy performances create a dream-like atmosphere that captivates audiences of all ages.
