Discover more about 一ツ山離水海食洞

一ツ山離水海食洞 (Ittsuzan Risui Kaishoku Dou) is a fascinating geological formation located in Fukubecho Yuyama, Tottori, Japan. It is a sea cave that was created by wave erosion but is now situated far from the coastline and above sea level. These caves form at the base of steep cliffs facing the sea, where the rock is more easily eroded along fault lines. The cave's formation is linked to the higher sea levels during the Jomon period, approximately 6,000 years ago. As the sea receded, the cave was left exposed, offering valuable clues about past sea levels and the geological history of the area. The cave is found in an isolated hill of tuff breccia within the sand dunes. The cave's opening is 2-3 meters above the ground, and the cave contains rounded gravel. The San'in Coast, where Ittsuzan is located, is known for its well-developed coastal erosion features such as wave-cut platforms, sea cliffs, and sea caves. These features provide a glimpse into the dynamic processes that have shaped the coastline over time.
