Nidai Ōsugi: A Second-Generation Giant

Witness the enduring legacy of Yakushima's ancient cedar forests at Nidai Ōsugi, a second-generation giant in a realm of natural wonder.

4.5

Nidai Ōsugi, the Second Generation Great Cedar, stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Yakushima's ancient forests. Located in Kusugawa, this impressive tree is a successor to the original Ōsugi, a massive cedar that fell centuries ago. The Nidai Ōsugi sprouted from the remains of its predecessor, carrying on the legacy of these ancient giants. Yakushima is renowned for its old-growth cedar forests, called Yakusugi, many of which are over 1,000 years old. The island's unique environment, characterized by high rainfall and nutrient-poor granite soil, contributes to the slow growth and longevity of these trees. The Nidai Ōsugi, while not as old as the famed Jōmon Sugi, still embodies the grandeur and resilience of Yakushima's natural heritage. Visiting the Nidai Ōsugi offers a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the scale and beauty of these ancient trees. While it may not be the most famous tree on the island, it provides a quieter, more contemplative experience, allowing visitors to reflect on the cycles of life and the enduring power of the natural world.
