Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start your journey from Vientiane. Head southeast on Route 13 (also known as the Asian Highway 12) for about 25 kilometers until you reach the turnoff for Phou Khao Khouay National Bio-Diversity Conservation Area, which is well-marked. Turn left onto the access road and follow it for about 15 kilometers until you arrive at the park entrance. Please be aware that there is an entrance fee to access the conservation area, which is approximately 20,000 LAK (about $2 USD) per person.

• Public Transportation

  For those relying on public transport, start from Vientiane's main bus station, also known as the Northern Bus Station. You can catch a minivan or a bus heading to the nearby town of Pakxan. Ask the driver to drop you off at the turnoff for Phou Khao Khouay. This journey typically takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you reach the turnoff, you will need to hire a local tuk-tuk or moto-taxi to take you the remaining 15 kilometers to the park entrance. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand; it should be around 30,000 to 50,000 LAK (approximately $3 to $5 USD) for the ride.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous traveler, cycling to Phou Khao Khouay is an option. Rent a bicycle in Vientiane and head south on Route 13. This route is approximately 40 kilometers long, so prepare for a full day of riding. Take necessary breaks and keep hydrated. Upon reaching the turnoff, follow the access road for another 15 kilometers to the park entrance. Remember to bring a map or GPS device to help navigate, and ensure your bicycle is in good working condition for the journey.
