Wat Sisaket, built between 1819 and 1824 by King Anouvong, distinguishes itself with Siamese-style architecture, setting it apart from traditional Lao temples. Its five-tiered roof and surrounding terrace, designed for safety during the Siamese army's expulsion of Vientiane's people, reflect a unique blend of styles.The temple's cloister walls feature thousands of small niches, each containing Buddha images crafted from various materials like wood, stone, and silver. Inside the main hall, visitors can admire around 2,000 Buddha statues of different sizes and shapes, dating from the 16th to 19th centuries. To the west of the temple, many statues bear the marks of past wars, serving as a reminder of the nation's history. The temple also houses a museum with approximately 8,000 valuable books and a 400-year-old library containing palm-leaf manuscripts about Buddhist teachings.Wat Sisaket remains an active monastery, where monks and novices reside. Visitors should dress respectfully, with long clothes, and remove their shoes before entering the temple. The best time to visit is during the cool, dry season from November to February to avoid midday heat and crowds.
