The House of Dannenstern, or Dannenšterna nams in Latvian, is a historical treasure nestled in the heart of Riga's Old Town. Constructed in 1696 for Ernst Metsue von Dannenstern, a prosperous Dutch merchant who owned a fleet of 150 ships and was later granted nobility by the Swedish King, the house represents one of the most important Baroque examples in Latvia. Designed by German architect Rupert Bindenschu, who was also the chief architect of Riga, the building's street facade is adorned with limestone, featuring giant order Corinthian pilasters and two elaborate entrance portals crafted by sculptor D. Walter. The structure actually comprises three interconnected buildings: the main street-facing building and two courtyard buildings, all linked by an underpass. The main building has two stories, an attic, a basement, and five additional floors built into the roof. Today, the House of Dannenstern is recognized as a cultural monument of national significance. While some visitors describe it as abandoned and poorly maintained, others are captivated by its antiquity, unique charm and the potential for restoration. It stands near other significant landmarks such as Riga Castle and the Powder Tower, offering a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Riga's past residents.
