Discover more about Liepajas Southern Forts

Liepaja's Southern Forts, located between Klaipēdas Street and the beach, stand as a testament to Latvia's military history. Constructed in the late 19th century under the decree of Russian Tsar Alexander III, these fortifications were designed to protect the port of Liepāja. Although the fortress was planned to have armaments deployed, they never were. The constructed cellars were used as storage facilities during both World War I and World War II. Today, the forts offer a blend of history and nature. Visitors can explore the remnants of the fortifications, including towering walls and bunkers. The strategic layout provides views of the Baltic Sea, making it a spot for photography. The grounds are open to the public for hiking and enjoying the coastal air. Unlike the Middle Fort and Ravelin, the South Fort never engaged in war. In the 1920s and 1930s, the fortification area housed various factories. To the north of the South Fort is Liepāja's Central Cemetery, which includes a Red Army cemetery where Soviet soldiers who died near Liepāja are reburied.
