Discover more about House of the Black Heads

Located in the heart of Riga's Old Town, the House of the Black Heads is a magnificent edifice with a rich and storied past. Originally constructed in 1334, it served as a meeting and feasting venue for various Riga organizations. In the 17th century, it became the primary residence of the Brotherhood of Black Heads, a jovial group of unmarried foreign merchants, mostly of German origin. The brotherhood's emblem, a moor's head, was inspired by Saint Maurice, their patron saint. The building's architecture showcases a blend of styles, most notably the Dutch Renaissance façade, reflecting the artistic trends of different periods. The opulent design features sculptures, coats of arms, and reliefs depicting historical and mythological scenes. The bright red bricks contrast with white decorative borders, creating a striking appearance. During World War II, the House of the Black Heads was almost entirely destroyed. The building was reduced to rubble after being bombed and burned. In 1992, archaeological excavations began on the site, and in 1996, reconstruction commenced. The rebuilt House of the Black Heads was consecrated on December 9, 1999. Today, the building hosts a museum with artifacts related to the Brotherhood of Black Heads, and grand ballrooms are used for cultural events and state receptions. Visitors can also explore the medieval cellar, one of the few original parts of the building that survived the war.
