Discover more about House of the Black Heads

Located in the heart of Riga's Old Town, the House of the Black Heads is a magnificent edifice with a storied past. Constructed in 1334, it initially served as a meeting and banquet venue for various Riga organizations. In the 17th century, the Brotherhood of Black Heads, a jovial group of unmarried merchants, mostly of German origin, adopted it as their primary residence. These merchants significantly contributed to Riga's economic and cultural life, hosting lavish festivals and supporting the arts. The building's architecture showcases a blend of styles, most notably the Dutch Renaissance facade. Over the centuries, the House of the Black Heads underwent several renovations, reflecting different artistic trends. The building was heavily damaged during World War II and subsequently demolished in the Soviet era. However, during Latvia's Third National Awakening, the decision was made to rebuild it. The reconstructed House of the Black Heads was consecrated on December 9, 1999. Today, the House of the Black Heads functions as an event center and museum. Visitors can explore its historic cellars, which are among the few original parts of the building that survived the war. The cellars feature interactive exhibits about Riga's commerce and the history of the Brotherhood of Black Heads. The building also houses grand ballrooms, which host cultural events and significant ceremonies. From 2012 to 2016, it even served as a temporary residence for the President of Latvia.
