Discover more about Alpschaukäserei Schwägalp

The Alpschaukäserei Schwägalp, located in Urnäsch, is more than just a cheese shop; it's a celebration of Swiss heritage and culinary artistry. Since 1996, this demonstration dairy has been crafting traditional cheeses against the breathtaking backdrop of the Säntis mountain. Founded by local farmers who graze their cows on the surrounding Alps, the Käserei (cheese dairy) embodies regionality and time-honored techniques. Each summer, approximately 55 farmers deliver fresh Alpine milk, which is then transformed into Schwägalp cheese, Raclettekäse, Mutschli, butter, and goat cheese. The majority of the cheese is sold to wholesalers, while the remainder is available in the on-site shop. Visitors can observe the cheese-making process through a large glass front, offering a glimpse into the traditional methods passed down through generations. The best time to visit is in the morning when the milk is processed. The shop offers a variety of products, including the distinctive Schwägalp cheese, known for its balanced aroma and unique character derived from the lush alpine herbs. Other local products like yogurt and fondue mixes are also available. The Schwägalp region itself is a destination, offering hiking trails, and the Säntis cable car, which provides access to panoramic views. In winter, visitors can enjoy skiing, sleigh rides, and winter hiking.
