Discover more about City Museum of Lindau

The City Museum of Lindau, or Stadtmuseum Lindau, offers a captivating journey through the history and culture of this charming island city on Lake Constance. Located in the heart of Lindau's old town, the museum is housed within the 'Haus zum Cavazzen,' a magnificent baroque building constructed in 1729. This architectural gem, one of the most beautiful baroque townhouses in the Lake Constance region, was once the residence and business premises of the patrician Seutter von Loetzen family. Inside, visitors can explore a diverse collection of artifacts that span centuries, providing insights into the local history, culture, and art of the region. The museum's exhibits feature paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th centuries, offering a glimpse into Lindau's artistic heritage. You'll also find displays of Lindau's home décor, showcasing furniture from the Gothic to Art Nouveau periods, as well as handicrafts and documents related to the town's history. One of the museum's highlights is its collection of mechanical musical instruments, including barrel organs and music boxes. These fascinating artifacts offer a glimpse into a largely forgotten chapter of technical and cultural history. The museum also preserves numerous historical views of the town and portraits that reflect the lives of Lindau's citizens throughout the centuries. The museum's origins trace back to the late 19th century when a local association sought to document and share the history and culture of the former imperial city. The collections were moved to their current location in 1930, after the Cavazzen was donated to the city with the obligation to maintain the museum.
