Discover more about City Museum of Lindau

The City Museum of Lindau, or Stadtmuseum Lindau, is located in the heart of Lindau's island on Lake Constance. The museum is situated in the baroque community center known as Haus zum Cavazzen, one of the most beautiful baroque townhouses on Lake Constance. Built in 1729 and 1730, the Haus zum Cavazzen was constructed for the wealthy merchant family Seutter by architect Jakob Grubenmann after a fire devastated much of the area in 1728. The museum's collection includes paintings and sculptures from the 15th to the 19th centuries, furniture from Gothic to Art Nouveau, handicrafts, and documents on the town's history. Historical toys and mechanical musical instruments offer a glimpse into the past. Noteworthy pieces include the late Gothic panel painting Lindauer Beweinung from around 1420 and a Madonna statue from the Multscher workshop. Also of interest are two well-preserved mortuary tablets from the 17th century, formerly located in the historic Aeschacher cemetery. The museum hosts special exhibitions of modern art, including works by Picasso, Chagall, and Miró. The museum aims to preserve and share the cultural heritage of Lindau and the surrounding region with visitors of all ages.
