Discover more about Hängebrücke über die Argen

Spanning the Argen River between Kressbronn and Langenargen, the Hängebrücke über die Argen stands as a testament to late 19th-century engineering. Constructed between 1896 and 1897, under the reign of King Wilhelm II, this suspension bridge is not only a vital link for pedestrians and cyclists but also a captivating historical monument. Before the bridge's construction, crossing the Argen was a significant challenge, often requiring a lengthy detour. In 1838, a wooden bridge was erected, but it was eventually replaced by the current suspension bridge. The design, influenced by the iron Danube bridge in Budapest, was led by Karl von Leibbrand and executed by Maschinenfabrik Esslingen. The bridge's construction was innovative for its time, avoiding supporting pillars in the riverbed to prevent flood damage. The bridge is 72 meters long and 6.2 meters wide. During World War II, there was a plan to destroy the bridge, but it was prevented at the last minute. In 1977, a new bridge was built to accommodate heavier traffic, and the Hängebrücke was preserved for pedestrians and cyclists. Today, the Hängebrücke über die Argen is a popular attraction, offering a glimpse into the region's history and engineering.
