Museum Regiunal Surselva: A Journey Through Surselva's Past

Step back in time at the Museum Regiunal Surselva, nestled in the heart of Ilanz within the venerable Casa Carniec. This ethnographic museum, conceived bilingually in German and Romansh, invites visitors to explore the rich heritage of the Surselva region. The Casa Carniec itself is a historical treasure, once the oldest residence of the noble Schmid von Grüneck family. Its vaulted cellars and ground floor whisper tales of the High Middle Ages, while a Renaissance hall displays captivating 16th-century murals. These 'al secco' paintings, adorning the former banqueting hall, depict scenes intertwined with floral, vine, and oak motifs. Inside, the museum unfolds across several floors, presenting exhibits from over 60 villages in the Surselva. The displays highlight the lives and traditions of both the Romansh and German-speaking communities, including the Walser people who settled in the Safien Valley and Obersaxen.
