Getting There

  • Car

    If you're driving from Chinteche, head northeast on the M5 road towards the town of Nkhotakota. After about 1.5 hours, you will reach the ferry terminal at the southern tip of Lake Malawi. You will need to pay a fee for the ferry (approximately 5,000 MWK for a vehicle) to cross to Likoma Island. The ferry ride takes about 1.5 hours. Once you arrive at Likoma Island, follow the signs to Kaya Mawa, which is located in Nkwazi Village on the eastern side of the island.

  • Public Transportation (Minibus)

    From Chinteche, take a minibus heading towards Nkhotakota. The fare is usually around 1,000 MWK. Once you arrive at Nkhotakota, you will need to take a taxi or walk to the ferry terminal (about 10 minutes). At the terminal, purchase your ferry ticket to Likoma Island (about 5,000 MWK). After the ferry ride, you can take a local taxi or ask for a ride that can take you to Kaya Mawa in Nkwazi Village.

    Regardless of how you arrive at the ferry terminal, you will board the ferry to Likoma Island. Make sure to check the ferry schedule in advance as it may vary, and arrive early to secure a spot on the ferry as it can get crowded. The ferry ride lasts approximately 1.5 hours and offers beautiful views of Lake Malawi.

    Once you arrive on Likoma Island, local taxis are available at the port. The fare to Kaya Mawa in Nkwazi Village should be negotiated (typically around 2,000 MWK). The drive is short, approximately 10-15 minutes depending on road conditions.
