Discover more about Triton Fountain

The Triton Fountain, situated prominently at the entrance to Valletta, is one of Malta's most recognizable landmarks. Created by sculptor Vincent Apap and designer Victor Anastasi, the fountain was completed in 1959 and quickly became a symbol of the city and the entire island. The fountain features three bronze Tritons, mythological sea gods, holding up a large basin. The design was inspired by the Fontana delle Tartarughe in Rome, and the figures represent Malta's historical links with the sea. The fountain is constructed with concrete and clad in travertine slabs. Each Triton's face is visible when looking at the fountain from the City Gate. Over the years, the fountain has served as a backdrop for national celebrations and even as a stage for performances. After suffering damage, it underwent extensive restoration, completed in 2018, to coincide with Valletta's designation as European Capital of Culture. Today, the Triton Fountain stands as a testament to Malta's artistic heritage and a welcoming beacon for all who visit.
