Discover more about Church of Saint Francis of Assisi

Located on Republic Street in Valletta, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is a testament to Malta's rich religious and artistic heritage. The church was initially built in 1598 and completed by 1607. However, structural defects led to a complete rebuild in 1681, generously funded by Grand Master Gregorio Carafa, whose coat of arms still adorns the façade. The church's architecture showcases stunning Baroque design. In the 1920s, architect Emanuel Borg expanded the church, adding a dome. This expansion led to the replacement of some original frescos by Giuseppe Calì with works by Gianni Vella. Inside, visitors can admire masterpieces by Mattia Preti, Pietro Gagliardi, and Filippo Paladini, along with a revered statue of Saint Francis. A notable feature is the exquisite Mascioni pipe organ, built in 1932 and restored in 2014. Adjacent to the church is the oratory, showcasing Baroque paintings, an intricate altarpiece, and traditional monks' benches. The oratory mirrors the church's opening hours and offers confession sessions. The church building is listed on the National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.
