History of Quabbin and Ware River Valley

The Creation of the Quabbin Reservoir

The Quabbin Reservoir, one of the largest man-made public water supplies in the United States, was constructed between 1930 and 1939. This ambitious project was undertaken to provide a reliable water source for the Boston metropolitan area. The creation of the reservoir required the flooding of the Swift River Valley, leading to the disincorporation of four towns: Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott. The residents of these towns were relocated, and remnants of their communities lie beneath the waters of the reservoir today.

Disincorporation of the Four Towns

In order to create the Quabbin Reservoir, the Massachusetts legislature passed an act in 1927 that led to the disincorporation of the towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich, and Prescott by 1938. These communities were forcibly evacuated, and their buildings were demolished or moved. The process was highly emotional and disruptive for the residents, many of whom had deep familial and historical ties to the area. Today, the memory of these lost towns is preserved through historical markers and the Quabbin Park Cemetery, where many of the relocated graves were moved.

Long before European settlers arrived, the region now known as the Quabbin and Ware River Valley was inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Nipmuc people.
