Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start your journey from Creel, a popular town in the Tarahumara Sierra. Head south on the main highway (Mexican Federal Highway 16) for approximately 18 kilometers (about 11 miles). Look for signs indicating Lake Arareco, which is located to your right. The road will lead you directly to a parking area near the lake. Be aware that the last few kilometers may be on a gravel road, so drive carefully.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Lake Arareco using public transportation, first, take a bus from Creel to the nearby town of San Rafael. Buses operate several times a day and the fare is typically around 30-50 Mexican Pesos. Once you arrive in San Rafael, you can hire a local taxi or a shared van (known as 'colectivo') to take you to Lake Arareco. The taxi fare should be around 100-150 Mexican Pesos, while the colectivo may cost less, around 20-30 Mexican Pesos per person. Make sure to confirm the destination with the driver.

• Hiking

  For the adventurous, you can hike to Lake Arareco if you're starting from Creel. The hiking trail begins at the edge of town and follows well-marked paths through the beautiful Tarahumara landscape. It's approximately a 7-kilometer (4.3 miles) hike that may take around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace. Ensure you have proper hiking gear and plenty of water. The trail can be rocky and uneven, so be cautious.
