Car
If you're traveling by car from Mandalay, head south on the Mandalay-Myitkyina Road (Highway 1) for approximately 2 hours until you reach the turnoff for Mt Popa. Take the right turn onto the Bagan-Mt Popa Road. Continue on this road for about 30 minutes until you see the signs for Mt Popa. The journey offers picturesque views of the surrounding landscape. Be aware that parking is available at the base of the mountain, but ensure to check for any parking fees.
Public Transportation (Bus)
From Bagan, catch a local bus heading towards Kyaukpadaung. Buses leave regularly from the bus station in Bagan. The journey takes around 1 hour and costs approximately 1,000 MMK (~$0.75). Once you arrive in Kyaukpadaung, you can either take a taxi or a motorbike taxi to reach the base of Mt Popa, which is about 20 minutes away. Expect to pay about 3,000 MMK (~$2) for the taxi ride.
Shared Taxi
Another option from Bagan is to take a shared taxi to Mt Popa. You can find shared taxis at the main taxi stands or along the streets. This option is faster than the bus and costs around 5,000 MMK (~$3.75) per person. The ride should take about 45 minutes, and you'll be dropped off directly at the entrance to Mt Popa.
Motorbike Rental
For the more adventurous, renting a motorbike in Bagan is a great way to reach Mt Popa. Rental shops are plentiful, and prices are around 7,000 MMK (~$5.25) per day. Head south on the Mandalay-Myitkyina Road, then take the Bagan-Mt Popa road as mentioned earlier. The ride offers flexibility to stop and enjoy the scenery along the way. Just make sure you have an international driving permit.
