Central Myanmar Essentials

  • Central Myanmar is accessible primarily through Mandalay International Airport (MDL), which is well-connected to major cities in Asia. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or use shuttle services to reach various parts of Central Myanmar. Alternatively, Yangon International Airport (RGN) also serves as a gateway, albeit a longer journey by road or domestic flight to Central Myanmar. Train services and long-distance buses are also available from major cities like Yangon and Mandalay.
  • Central Myanmar offers a variety of transportation options. For intra-city travel, taxis and motorbike taxis are widely available. Buses and minibuses (locally known as 'hiace') are the most common forms of inter-city transport, connecting towns and cities. For a more scenic route, you can take a boat ride along the Ayeyarwady River. Renting a bicycle or motorbike is a popular option for tourists who wish to explore at their own pace. Car rentals with drivers are also available for day trips or longer journeys.
  • The official currency is the Myanmar Kyat (MMK). Credit cards are increasingly accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops in larger towns, but it's advisable to carry cash, especially in smaller towns and rural areas. ATMs are available in major towns, but they may not always be reliable, so it's prudent to withdraw sufficient cash in advance. Currency exchange services are available at airports, banks, and major hotels.
  • Central Myanmar is generally safe for tourists, but it's essential to take standard precautions. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas and keep your belongings secure in crowded places. While most areas are safe, it's best to stay informed about any local advisories. Some areas, like parts of Mandalay, may have higher petty crime rates, so exercise caution. Always use reputable transport services and avoid unlicensed guides.
  • In case of an emergency, dial 199 for police assistance and 192 for medical emergencies. Major towns have hospitals and clinics, but the facilities may not be up to international standards. It's highly recommended to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies. For minor health issues, pharmacies are available in towns where you can purchase over-the-counter medications.
  • Fashion: Do dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites. Avoid wearing revealing clothing. Religion: Do show respect at pagodas and temples. Remove your shoes and socks before entering, and avoid pointing your feet at religious statues. Public Transport: Do be respectful to fellow passengers. Don’t eat or drink on public transport. Greetings: Do greet people with a slight bow or a nod. Handshakes are common but use the right hand or both hands. Eating & Drinking: Do try local foods and accept offerings graciously. Don’t refuse food or drink, as it may be considered impolite.
  • To experience Central Myanmar like a local, visit local markets where you can buy fresh produce and traditional Myanmar goods. Engage with locals who are often friendly and eager to share their culture. Don’t miss visiting ancient temples and pagodas in places like Bagan and Mingun. For an authentic experience, try participating in local festivals and traditional ceremonies. Taking a boat ride on the Ayeyarwady River provides a unique perspective of the region's natural beauty.

History of Central Myanmar

  • Central Myanmar is home to the ancient city of Bagan, which was the capital of the Bagan Empire from the 9th to the 13th century. During this time, the empire unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. The Bagan Empire is renowned for its cultural and architectural achievements, particularly the construction of over 10,000 religious monuments, including temples, stupas, and monasteries. The most prominent among them are the Ananda Temple, Dhammayangyi Temple, and Shwezigon Pagoda.

  • The reign of King Anawrahta (1044–1077) marked the beginning of the Pagan Kingdom's golden age. Anawrahta is credited with introducing Theravada Buddhism to the region, which led to significant religious and cultural transformations. The king's efforts in promoting Buddhism resulted in the construction of thousands of temples and the establishment of Bagan as a major center for Buddhist learning and pilgrimage.

  • In 1287, the Mongol invasion led by Kublai Khan marked the decline of the Bagan Empire. The Mongols sacked Bagan, causing significant destruction and leading to the fall of the empire. Despite the invasion, many of Bagan's temples and monuments survived and continue to stand as testaments to the city's historical and cultural legacy.

  • Following the decline of the Bagan Empire, the Ava Kingdom emerged as a dominant power in Central Myanmar from the 14th to the 16th century. The kingdom's capital, Inwa (Ava), became a significant political, economic, and cultural center. The Ava Kingdom is known for its contributions to Burmese literature, art, and architecture. Key historical sites from this period include the Bagaya Monastery and the Nanmyin Watchtower.

  • The Konbaung Dynasty, which ruled from 1752 to 1885, is notable for its efforts to reunify Myanmar and resist British colonial expansion. Central Myanmar played a crucial role during this period, with the city of Mandalay serving as the last royal capital. King Mindon Min (1853–1878) established Mandalay as a cultural and religious center, commissioning the construction of the Mandalay Palace and the Kuthodaw Pagoda, which houses the world's largest book.

  • Following the Third Anglo-Burmese War, the British annexed Upper Burma in 1885, marking the beginning of British colonial rule. Central Myanmar, particularly Mandalay, experienced significant changes during this period, including the introduction of Western education, infrastructure development, and the exploitation of natural resources. The colonial era also saw the rise of nationalist movements that eventually led to the country's independence in 1948.

  • During World War II, Myanmar became a major battleground between Allied forces and the Japanese army. Central Myanmar witnessed significant military campaigns, including the Battle of Mandalay in 1945. The Japanese occupation (1942-1945) had a profound impact on the region, leading to widespread destruction and suffering. The end of the war paved the way for Myanmar's independence and the eventual establishment of the Union of Burma.

  • Today, Central Myanmar continues to be a vital cultural and historical region. The ancient city of Bagan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019, recognizing its outstanding universal value. Mandalay remains an important cultural hub, known for its traditional arts and crafts, including gold leaf making, wood carving, and silk weaving. The region's rich history and vibrant culture make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking to explore Myanmar's heritage.
