History of Grand Island

In 1857, a group of German settlers from Davenport, Iowa, chose a spot on the Platte River's north channel to establish a new community. This area, an island in the river, inspired the name 'Grand Island'. The settlers arrived on July 4, 1857, and by the end of September, they had built log houses and established a settlement.
