Car
If you are driving from Lake Placid, NY, take NY-73 W towards Keene. After approximately 15 miles, turn left onto NY-9N S. Continue on NY-9N S for about 14 miles until you reach the intersection with NY-86. Turn right onto NY-86 W and drive for about 7 miles. Then, turn left onto County Route 12 (also known as Jay Mountain Road) and follow this road for about 3 miles. The trailhead for Jay Mountain Wilderness will be on your left. Please note that parking is limited, so arrive early to secure a spot.
Public Transportation
If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Lake Placid or Saranac Lake to the town of Lewis. The bus service may not run frequently, so check the schedule in advance. Once you arrive in Lewis, it's about a 6-mile walk to the Jay Mountain Wilderness trailhead. You can ask locals for directions to the trailhead, or use a map app on your smartphone. Be prepared for this walking distance as public transport does not directly reach the wilderness area.
Bicycle
For those who are adventurous and have a bicycle, you can ride from Lake Placid to Jay Mountain Wilderness. Take the same route as if you were driving, following NY-73 W to NY-9N S. Riding along these roads can be scenic but be cautious of traffic. The total distance is about 40 miles one way, so ensure you are physically prepared for this journey.
Hiking
For experienced hikers, it is possible to hike to Jay Mountain Wilderness from nearby trailheads. For example, you can start from the Roaring Brook trailhead, which is a 5-mile hike to the wilderness area. Make sure you have a good map and follow the marked trails. This is a strenuous option that requires proper gear and preparation.
