Getting There

  • Car

    If you are traveling by car, first make your way to Mount Cook Village, which is the main hub for accessing Mount Cook National Park. From the village, head south on State Highway 80 towards the Tasman Valley. After approximately 15 kilometers, look for the sign indicating the start of the Ball Shelter Route. This is where you will park your vehicle. The parking area is clearly marked, and you may need to pay a small parking fee. Once parked, follow the Ball Shelter Route on foot. The trail is well marked and leads you towards Douglas Rock Hut.

  • Public Transportation

    If you are using public transportation, take a bus from Christchurch to Mount Cook Village. Several bus services operate this route, and you should check schedules in advance. Once you arrive at Mount Cook Village, you can either walk to the start of the Ball Shelter Route or take a taxi to the trailhead.
