Start at Gisborne's main city center, near the Gisborne i-SITE Visitor Centre located at 20 Grey Street. From there, head east along Grey Street until you reach the intersection with Childers Road. Turn left onto Childers Road and continue walking straight until you reach the roundabout. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto Customhouse Street. Follow Customhouse Street which will lead you towards the waterfront. Continue straight to the end of Customhouse Street, where it meets the intersection with Gladstone Road. Cross Gladstone Road and pick up the footpath leading onto Waikanae Beach. Walk along the beach path for a scenic view and keep going until you reach the end of the beach. From there, look for the signs directing you to the paths leading up to the lookout. Follow the marked trails up to Bernie Vette Lookout, enjoying the stunning views over Gisborne along the way.

Begin your journey at the Gisborne i-SITE Visitor Centre at 20 Grey Street. Take the local bus service from the nearest bus stop, which is located on Grey Street. Check the local bus schedule for routes heading towards Whataupoko. One of the bus lines will take you close to the area of Whataupoko. After disembarking at the closest stop, follow the signs pointing towards the walking trail for Bernie Vette Lookout. It is a short walk from the bus stop to the trailhead. Follow the marked footpaths that lead up to the lookout for a beautiful view of the area.
