Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car from Apurímac, head towards Cusco via the PE-3S highway. The drive takes approximately 6-7 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once in Cusco, follow the signs to Machu Picchu. You will need to park your car in the designated parking area in Aguas Calientes, as cars are not allowed in the Machu Picchu archaeological site. Parking fees are generally around 10-15 soles per day.

• Public Transportation (Bus)

  To travel by bus, take a bus from Abancay or another city in Apurímac to Cusco. The journey takes about 5-6 hours and costs around 25-40 soles. From Cusco, take a taxi or a local bus to the Ollantaytambo train station, which is approximately 1.5 hours away. Train tickets to Aguas Calientes cost around 60-100 soles one way. Once in Aguas Calientes, you can hike or take a bus up to Machu Picchu. The bus fare is about 24 soles one way.

• Train

  After reaching Ollantaytambo by bus from Cusco, board a train to Aguas Calientes. The train ride takes about 2 hours, offering stunning views of the Sacred Valley. Make sure to book your train tickets in advance, as they can sell out quickly, especially during peak season. Prices for train tickets vary, generally ranging from 60 to 100 soles depending on the service class.

• Hiking

  For the adventurous traveler, consider hiking the Inca Trail or the alternative Salkantay Trek to reach Machu Picchu. These treks usually take 4-5 days and require permits. The typical cost for guided treks ranges from 1000 to 2000 soles, depending on the inclusions (meals, guides, equipment). Ensure you are physically prepared for this challenging trek and book your permits ahead of time.

• Entry to Machu Picchu

  Regardless of your mode of transport, don't forget to purchase your entry ticket to Machu Picchu in advance. Ticket prices vary based on the type of access (standard, with Huayna Picchu, etc.) and typically range from 152 to 200 soles.
