Getting There

Walking
If you are starting from the historic Ribeira District, head towards the Douro River and walk along the riverfront promenade (Cais da Ribeira). Enjoy the view of the river and the iconic Dom Luís I Bridge. Continue along the promenade until you reach the base of the bridge. From there, ascend the stairs to the upper level of the bridge. Once on the upper level, walk across the bridge towards Vila Nova de Gaia. As you cross, take in the panoramic views of Porto. Once you reach the Gaia side, continue straight ahead until you reach the first major intersection, then turn left onto Rua de Cima do Muro. Follow this street until you see the signs for the Fernandine Walls, which will lead you to Escadas do Caminho Novo.

To reach the Fernandine Walls from São Bento Metro Station, take the Metro Line D (the yellow line) towards Santo Ovídio. Disembark at the 'São Bento' station, which is the closest stop to the walls. Exit the station and walk towards the front of the station. From there, head down Rua de 31 de Janeiro until you reach the intersection with Rua de São Bento da Vitória. Turn left onto Rua de São Bento da Vitória and walk straight until you reach the signage for the Fernandine Walls at Escadas do Caminho Novo.
