History of Gangwon Province

Gangwon Province, known for its picturesque landscapes and natural beauty, has its origins in the early Three Kingdoms period of Korean history. The region was initially part of the ancient kingdom of Goguryeo. Following the unification of the Korean Peninsula under the Silla Dynasty in 676 AD, the area became known as Gangwon, derived from the names of its two principal cities, Gangneung and Wonju.
