History of North Central Province

Anuradhapura, the first capital of Sri Lanka, was founded in the 4th century BC. This ancient city became a major center of Theravada Buddhism and house to numerous monasteries and stupas. It remained the capital for over a millennium and was a hub for both political and religious activity.
After the fall of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa rose as the second capital around the 11th century AD. The city flourished under the reign of King Parakramabahu I, who constructed extensive irrigation systems, temples, and palaces.
