Getting There

  • Bicycle

    From the center of Tanga, head southeast towards the Tanga-Mombasa Road. Continue along this road for approximately 10 kilometers until you reach the turn-off for Kolekole. Turn left onto the road towards Kolekole and follow the signs for Tongoni Ruins. After about 3 kilometers, you will see the entrance to Tongoni Ruins on your right.

  • Walking

    If you prefer walking, start at the Tanga Clock Tower and head southeast along Jamhuri Street. Continue straight to reach the Tanga-Mombasa Road. Once you reach this road, turn left and walk about 10 kilometers until you reach the Kolekole turn-off. Turn left and walk for another 3 kilometers until you see the entrance to Tongoni Ruins on your right.

  • Public Transport (Dala-Dala)

    From Tanga town, locate the Dala-Dala (shared minibus) terminal and take a Dala-Dala heading towards Muheza. Inform the conductor that you are going to Kolekole. The ride will take about 30 minutes. Get off at the Kolekole stop and walk approximately 3 kilometers towards the Tongoni Ruins entrance, which will be on your right. Look for signs indicating the ruins along the way.
