Kropyvnytskyi, originally known as Yelisavetgrad, was founded in 1754 as a fortress to protect the southern borders of the Russian Empire. The city was named after Empress Elizabeth of Russia, and it quickly grew as a military and administrative center due to its strategic location.

During the 19th century, Yelisavetgrad developed into a significant cultural and industrial hub. With Ukraine's independence in 1991, Kirovohrad, as it was then known, began to reassert its cultural and historical identity. In 2016, reflecting a broader trend of decommunization across Ukraine, the city was renamed Kropyvnytskyi in honor of Marko Kropyvnytskyi, a prominent Ukrainian playwright and theater director. The renaming marked a significant cultural shift and reaffirmed the city's Ukrainian heritage.
