Discover more about Aros Waterfall
A Woodland Haven with Cascading Waterfalls
Aros Park, located just outside Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, is a verdant woodland sanctuary that features the enchanting Aros Waterfall. The park’s main attraction is a trail following the Aros Burn, a stream that meanders through lush forest to reveal two stunning waterfalls. The upper falls are visible from the car park and accessible via a short downhill walk, while the lower falls cascade into a deep gorge, offering a more dramatic spectacle with Tobermory Bay as a backdrop. These waterfalls are framed by thick ferns, mature trees, and rich vegetation, creating a tranquil and picturesque setting that changes beautifully with the seasons.Historical Roots and Landscape Features
Aros Park was once part of the Aros estate, owned by the Allan family from the late 19th century until the mid-20th century. Though the original estate house no longer stands, remnants such as the old mill, generator shed, and an artificial lochan remain. The lochan was created by damming the Aros Burn to provide power for the mill and now serves as a peaceful focal point surrounded by beech, cypress, and oak trees. This blend of natural and historical elements enriches the park’s character and offers visitors insight into the local heritage.Diverse Trails and Recreational Opportunities
Beyond the waterfalls, Aros Park features several well-maintained trails suitable for various abilities. The Lochan Trail is a gentle, mostly flat gravel path circling the lochan, accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs, ideal for a peaceful stroll. The waterfalls trail includes some steep and uneven sections, with rocky and sometimes boggy terrain, requiring careful footing especially after rain. The park also boasts a disc golf course, picnic areas with barbecue points, a children’s play trail, and a fishing loch stocked with trout, providing a range of activities for families and outdoor enthusiasts alike.Wildlife and Botanical Richness
The park’s diverse ecology supports a variety of flora and fauna. In spring, rhododendrons planted by the Allan family burst into color, while the woodland shelters red squirrels, otters, and numerous bird species. Fungi and wildflowers add to the rich tapestry of life here. Informational boards along the trails educate visitors about the park’s natural environment and history, enhancing the experience for those interested in ecology and conservation.Views and Scenic Highlights
From vantage points within the park, visitors can enjoy sweeping panoramas of Tobermory’s colorful harbor and the distant craggy face of Ardnamurchan across the Sound of Mull. The lower waterfall’s deep gorge offers particularly striking views, especially when the water is in spate and thunders down with impressive force. The lochan’s reflective surface, often adorned with water lilies in summer, adds to the park’s serene atmosphere.Accessibility and Visitor Experience
Aros Park is open year-round with no entrance fee, welcoming visitors to explore at leisure. Facilities include toilets, picnic benches, seating areas, and trash bins. While some trails require moderate physical effort due to slopes and uneven ground, the park offers accessible routes and a variety of experiences for different visitor needs. Managed by Forestry and Land Scotland, the park balances recreational use with conservation, making it a cherished green space on the Isle of Mull.Iconic landmarks you can’t miss
