Travel Guide to The Gloup

Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car, start from the main town of Kirkwall. Take the A964 road heading west. Continue on the A964 until you reach the roundabout at St. Margaret's Hope. At the roundabout, take the first exit onto the A961, heading towards South Ronaldsay. Follow the A961 and then take a left onto the B9047 towards The Gloup. The drive will take approximately 50 minutes. When you arrive, there is limited parking available nearby.

• Public Transportation

  To reach The Gloup via public transportation, start from Kirkwall and take the bus service operated by Orkney Islands Council. Board the bus to St. Margaret's Hope, which runs several times a day. Once you arrive at St. Margaret's Hope, you will need to take a local taxi to reach The Gloup, as public transport does not directly serve this attraction. Taxis are usually available at the bus stop, and the taxi ride will take around 10-15 minutes, costing approximately £10-£15.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, cycling to The Gloup is a great option. Starting from Kirkwall, take the A964 road west towards St. Margaret's Hope, then follow the A961 towards South Ronaldsay. The route is approximately 14 miles and will take about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on your pace. Be cautious as some roads may have traffic. Once you reach The Gloup, you can lock your bike at a designated area.

• Walking

  If you're staying nearby or are up for a long trek, you can walk to The Gloup from St. Margaret's Hope. This walk is roughly 3 miles and takes about an hour. Follow the B9047 road, enjoying the scenic views along the way. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring water, as the path can be uneven in places.
