Getting There

  • Walking

    Exit St. Peter's Basilica and head towards the grand colonnade. Walk straight through the colonnade towards the Piazza San Pietro. At the center of the piazza, you will see the tall obelisk. From there, take the path leading out of the square towards Via della Conciliazione. Continue walking straight along Via della Conciliazione until you reach the Tiber River. Cross the pedestrian bridge, Ponte Sant'Angelo, and you will arrive at the historic center of Rome, known as Centro Storico.

    From the exit of St. Peter's Basilica, turn right and walk along the perimeter of the Basilica towards the entrance of the Vatican Museums. Follow the signs that indicate the Vatican Museums. Once you reach the entrance of the Vatican Museums, you can explore the attractions within. To get to the Centro Storico, exit the museums and follow the same path back along Via della Conciliazione, continuing towards the Tiber River and crossing the Ponte Sant'Angelo.

    After visiting St. Peter's Basilica, if you wish to visit Castel Sant'Angelo, exit the Basilica and head right towards the colonnade. Walk along Via della Conciliazione towards the Tiber River. You will see the castle on your left as you approach the river. To continue to the Centro Storico, from Castel Sant'Angelo, walk along the riverbank towards Ponte Sant'Angelo, cross the bridge, and proceed into the historic area of Rome.
