It was an important trade and cultural center for several centuries. The city flourished in ancient and medieval times, but declined in the 13th century due to the Mongol invasions. Uplistsikhe is a complex of rock-cut caves and structures, including residential areas, temples, public buildings, and even a theater. Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is one of Georgia's most important and revered religious sites. Located in Mtskheta, just north of Tbilisi, the cathedral is a masterpiece of Georgian architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Svetitskhoveli, meaning "Life-Giving Pillar," has been a central place of worship since the 4th century. The current structure was built in the 11th century, replacing an earlier church. It’s often associated with the introduction of Christianity to Georgia by Saint Nino. Svetitskhoveli is considered one of the most sacred places in Georgia. According to tradition, the cathedral houses the "Chiton of Christ" (the robe of Christ), which is believed to have been brought to Georgia by Saint Nino and is revered by local Orthodox Christians.
