Discover more about Land Trust of North Alabama: Monte Sano Nature Preserve

Monte Sano Nature Preserve, meaning "Mountain of Health" in Spanish, offers a refreshing escape with over 1,100 acres of natural beauty and over 24 miles of trails. Managed by the Land Trust of North Alabama, the preserve is one of the largest urban nature preserves in the United States, located just two miles from downtown Huntsville. The preserve boasts a rich history, once serving as a health retreat in the late 19th century. Visitors came seeking the mountain's fresh air and therapeutic benefits, with the historic Hotel Monte Sano as a central attraction. Though the hotel is gone, remnants of the Monte Sano Railway, which transported visitors up the mountain, can still be seen along the Old Railroad Bed Trail. Today, the preserve offers diverse recreational activities, including hiking, biking, bird watching, and environmental education. Trails cater to all skill levels, from easy strolls to challenging climbs, showcasing native wildflowers, karst formations, sinkholes, and waterfalls. Popular trails include the Old Railroad Bed Trail, Bluff Line Trail, and Three Caves Loop. The preserve also connects to the trail networks of Monte Sano State Park and Burritt on the Mountain, expanding exploration opportunities. Special features include Three Caves, a former limestone quarry; Trough Springs, the site of a Civil War skirmish; and diverse plant species, remnants of ancient climates. The Bankhead Trailhead offers a pavilion for picnics and gatherings. A multi-use greenway along Bankhead Parkway, slated for completion in the summer of 2025, will enhance accessibility for those with limited mobility.
