Discover more about Wernher von Braun Planetarium

Venture into the cosmos at the Wernher von Braun Planetarium, a unique Huntsville attraction managed by the Von Braun Astronomical Society (VBAS). Founded in 1954 as the Rocket City Astronomical Association with the support of Dr. Wernher von Braun, the planetarium offers an engaging and educational experience for all ages. Public shows are held every Saturday night, featuring presenter-led programs projected onto the dome using three HD digital projectors. These presentations cover a variety of astronomy-related topics, from constellations and planets to black holes and the structure of stars. A highlight of each show is the "star show," which uses a Spitz A3P projector to display the current night sky, helping visitors identify key constellations. What makes this planetarium truly special is its history. The dome itself was originally a mock-up used in the construction of the Saturn V rocket, a testament to Huntsville's rich aerospace heritage. After the show, weather permitting, experienced VBAS members offer telescope viewings, allowing visitors to observe planets, moons, and other celestial wonders. VBAS also hosts sidewalk astronomy events in conjunction with local community events. The planetarium is located within Monte Sano State Park, offering beautiful natural surroundings for a day of exploration.
