Discover more about Land Trust of North Alabama: Monte Sano Nature Preserve

Monte Sano Nature Preserve, meaning "Mountain of Health" in Spanish, is a sprawling 1,100+ acre natural escape located just two miles from downtown Huntsville, Alabama. Managed by the Land Trust of North Alabama, the preserve boasts over 24 miles of public trails for hiking, biking, and outdoor recreation. These trails connect to the trail networks of Monte Sano State Park and Burritt on the Mountain, offering a diverse range of experiences for all skill levels. The preserve's landscape features an abundance of native wildflowers, karst formations, sinkholes, and even waterfalls. Historically significant sites dot the area, including remnants of the Monte Sano Railway, which operated from 1888 to 1896, and Trough Springs, the site of one of the last Alabama confrontations of the Civil War. The Old Railroad Bed Trail follows the path of this historic railway. Visitors can explore unique geological features like the Three Caves, a former limestone quarry. The preserve is also home to several plant species considered "relics" from ancient climates, such as the American Smoketree and Morefield's Leather Flower. Monte Sano's higher altitude provides cool, fresh air, which led to the establishment of the Hotel Monte Sano in the late 1800s, a health resort that attracted visitors from across the United States. Today, a historic plaque marks the spot where the hotel once stood. The Land Trust of North Alabama has played a crucial role in preserving the region's natural heritage. The trails are well-maintained by the Land Trust and volunteers.
