Discover more about Monte Sano Giant Cross (74 ft.)

The Monte Sano Giant Cross is more than just a landmark; it's a symbol of faith, unity, and community spirit that graces Monte Sano Mountain in Huntsville, Alabama. Visible for miles, the cross has become an iconic part of the city's skyline and a popular destination for visitors seeking both spiritual solace and breathtaking views. The cross was built in 1963 through a united effort that involved multi-racial area churches and businesses. Architect Dick Dickson, who also designed Huntsville City Hall and the Von Braun Civic Center's arena, designed the 74-foot tall cross. This was a racially integrated and ecumenical effort during complicated times, with the goal to symbolize a city balanced in peace and faith. The 38-ton concrete cross has a cross beam of 31 feet and is encrusted with marbleized chips to better reflect the light. The cross replaced a smaller wooden cross that had stood on Monte Sano since around 1900. The Huntsville Ministerial Association spearheaded the project, with support from local churches, businesses, and individuals from diverse racial and religious backgrounds. The cross is accessible via the Rock Bluff Trail, a scenic and relatively easy hike that begins near Burritt on the Mountain. The trail is known for being handicap accessible, featuring raised boardwalks and smooth paths.
