Discover more about Brierfield Iron Works Park

Brierfield Ironworks Historical State Park offers a captivating journey into Alabama's industrial heritage. Established in 1861, the ironworks played a crucial role in supplying high-quality iron to the Confederate war effort. The park spans 45 acres and preserves the ruins of the Brierfield Furnace, offering visitors a chance to explore this significant historical site. Originally known as the Bibb County Iron Company, the ironworks was strategically located with access to natural resources and transportation routes. The Confederate government recognized its value and purchased the ironworks in 1863, renaming it the Bibb Naval Furnaces. Production increased with the addition of a second furnace and a rolling mill. However, in March 1865, Union troops raided Brierfield, destroying the furnaces and disrupting Confederate supply lines. After the war, the site was rebuilt, and Brierfield experienced a brief period of prosperity, earning the nickname "Magic City of Bibb County". Ultimately, the rise of more efficient iron production in Birmingham led to the ironworks' closure in 1894. Today, visitors can explore the furnace ruins, coke ovens, and other remnants of the ironworks. The park also features a museum with artifacts and exhibits related to the site's history. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy the park's scenic trails, which wind through woodlands and along the Little Cahaba River. The park also offers camping facilities, a swimming pool, a playground, and picnic areas. Throughout the year, Brierfield Ironworks Park hosts a variety of events, including Civil War reenactments and guided tours.
