Discover more about Ruins of the Red Mosque

The Red Mosque, situated within the walls of Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit), is a poignant reminder of the Ottoman Empire's influence on this historic Albanian city. Believed to have been constructed in the 15th century, around 1417, following the Ottoman conquest of Berat, the mosque is considered one of the oldest in Albania. Its name derives from the red bricks and limestone used in its construction. According to historical accounts, the Red Mosque served as a place of worship for soldiers garrisoned within the castle. The mosque's minaret is uniquely positioned to the left of the entrance, a design choice influenced by the surrounding walls. The cylindrical shape of the minaret, devoid of a facade, is also a rare architectural feature in Albanian minarets. Ottoman explorer Evliya Çelebi described it as an old, lonely, and strange mosque built in the antiquity style. Today, only the ruins of the Red Mosque remain, with the minaret being the most prominent feature. Visitors can climb the minaret's small circular staircase to enjoy panoramic views of Berat Castle, the city, and the surrounding landscape. The Red Mosque was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.
