Gjirokastra Castle, locally known as Kalaja e Gjirokastrës, is one of the largest castles in the Balkans, rising majestically above the city of Gjirokastra. Overlooking the Drino Valley, the castle has been a silent witness to the region's tumultuous history. The castle's origins can be traced back to the 4th and 5th centuries, with the first fortifications appearing between the 12th and 13th centuries. It served as a shelter during the Ottoman Empire and was significantly expanded by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the 19th century. Throughout its history, Gjirokastra Castle has served various roles. King Zog expanded the castle prison in 1932, and it was later used to house political prisoners during the communist regime. Today, the castle is a museum, featuring a collection of arms from WWI and WWII, the former prison, and a pavilion dedicated to the history of Gjirokastra. Visitors can explore the Clock Tower, offering panoramic views, and a recovered US Air Force jet, a relic of the Cold War. The castle also houses the Gjirokastra Museum, which details the city's history, and an armaments gallery displaying artillery from WWII. The prison, once used to hold political prisoners, now stands as a reminder of Albania's communist past. The castle is open to visitors and provides a unique insight into Albania's cultural and historical identity.
